Interoperability of Acrobat and Adobe Reader 6 and Acrobat Adobe Reader 8
You can open Adobe PDF files from your browser in one of two ways:
-- By using the Adobe Acrobat PDF plug-in to display PDF files within the browser window
-- By specifying Acrobat or Adobe Reader as a helper application to open PDF files in a separate window
Using the PDF plug-in
The Acrobat PDF plug-in (Nppdf32.dll) installs to the following folders:
-- Acrobat: Adobe/Acrobat 8.0/Acrobat/Browser
-- Adobe Reader: Adobe/Acrobat 8.0/Reader/Browser
-- Acrobat and Adobe Reader: Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/plugins
If you select a PDF file after installing the plug-in, the PDF file will download to the browser's Temp folder, and the browser will open Acrobat or Adobe Reader to display the file within the browser window. The Acrobat toolbar at the top of the browser window is an indicator that the PDF plug-in installed correctly.
If a PDF file doesn't display properly, then you may need to manually move the Acrobat PDF plug-in to the browser's plug-ins folder, if the plug-in isn't installed there automatically.
Configuring the browser to use Acrobat or Adobe Reader as a helper application
After you configure Acrobat or Adobe Reader as a helper application, the browser starts the helper application in a separate window and displays PDF files within that window. Acrobat and Adobe Reader both include a preference that lets you specify Acrobat or Adobe Reader as the helper application.
To configure Acrobat or Adobe Reader as a helper application:
1. Start Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
2. Choose Edit > Preferences.
3. Select Internet on the left.
4. Deselect Display PDF In Browser Using [ Acrobat application ], and then click OK.
5. Quit Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
The next time you select a link to a PDF file in the browser, a dialog box asks what you would like to do with the file. If you select Open It, the browser opens the PDF file in Acrobat or Adobe Reader (the helper application); if you select Save It To Disk, the browser saves the PDF file to your hard drive.

Downloading a PDF file to your hard drive
You can download PDF files to the hard drive either from a web page link or by using the Save As command in Acrobat or Adobe Reader. After you download a PDF file to the hard drive, you can copy text, distribute the file, or save the file to a disk.
To download a PDF file from a link:
1. Right-click the link to a PDF file and choose Save Link Target As from the pop-up menu.
2. In the Save As dialog box, select a location on the hard drive, and then click Save.
To download an open PDF file:
1. In the Acrobat or Adobe Reader toolbar, click Save A Copy.
2. Select a location on the hard drive, and then click Save.
Interoperability of Acrobat and Adobe Reader 7 and Acrobat Adobe Reader 8
When you install Acrobat 8 or Adobe Reader 8 and there is already an installation of Acrobat 7 or Adobe Reader 7 on the computer, the version 8 browser components will be installed, no matter what version of Acrobat or Adobe Reader is chosen to own the PDF mime type during installation. This is because the version 8 browser components work with both version 7 and version 8.
If, however, after installation of Acrobat 8 or Adobe Reader 8, you manually repair the installation of Adobe Acrobat 7 or Adobe Reader 7, the version 7 browser components for will be reinstalled. Trying to use version 8 to view a PDF file in the browser after this will result in an error message. In such a case, you must manually repair the version 8 installation by
Note: If the browser displays a blank screen instead of a PDF file, then it may be using the previous version of the browser plug-in.
The easiest solution is to reinstall Acrobat or Adobe Reader version 8, which will put the version 8 nppdf32.dll into the correct place. Alternatively, you copy it from the following location: C:\program files\Adobe\Acrobat 8\Acrobat\Browser\nppdf32.dll or C:\program files\Adobe\Reader 8\Reader\Browser\nppdf32.dll to the browsers plug-ins folder.
Note that the version 8 Adobe PDF plug-in (nppdf32.dll) willwork with both Acrobat and Adobe Reader 7 and 8.
Interoperability of Acrobat and Adobe Reader 6 and Acrobat Adobe Reader 8
The Adobe Acrobat 8 and Adobe Reader 8 installers allow the installation of version 8 to coexist with version 6. They do not, however, give a choice of mime type ownership. Version 8 of the PDF viewers will own the PDF mime type.
If you use Acrobat 6 or Adobe Reader 6 standalone to view a PDF file in the browser after you install Acrobat 8 or Adobe Reader 8, an error message will appear stating that the version of Acrobat that is running is not supported and to exit it and try again.
If you repair Acrobat 6 or Adobe Reader 6 after the installation of Acrobat 8 or Adobe Reader 7, then the Acrobat6 or Adobe Reader 6 browser components will be reinstalled. If you try to to use Acrobat 8 or Adobe Reader 8 to view a PDF file in the browser after, then you will see an error message. In such a case, manually repair the version 8 installation by going to Help > Repair Acrobat Installation from Acrobat or Adobe Reader 8.
